Frequently Asked Questions

Can I claim a rebate for my appointment?

Joanna is registered with Medicare. Clients with a Medicare Chronic Disease Management (CDM) plan from their GP can claim a partial rebate (note we do not bulk bill). Private health insurance rebates may also be available depending on your fund and cover type. You do not need a referral to claim from your private health fund.

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

You do not need a referral from your doctor to book an appointment with Joanna. If you plan to claim a rebate from your private health fund, a referral is not required. However, if you wish to claim a rebate from Medicare, you will need a referral from your GP and a Chronic Disease Management Plan.

Do you offer virtual (telehealth) appointments?

Yes, we consult with clients all around Australia. We use a secure platform called Coviu for all virtual consultations. You don’t need to download any software — we’ll simply send a link that opens in any browser on your computer, phone, or tablet. For clients in Melbourne, we also offer face-to-face appointments on Wednesdays at Honeycomb Health in Burwood 3125

Do you work with children or adolescents?

Our services are primarily aimed at adults. We do see school age children for IBS and food intolerances as long as they do not have other underlying health conditions.

What can I expect during my first appointment?

Your first appointment is a collaborative journey where we take the time to understand your unique story. Together, we’ll review your health history, current symptoms, and goals. From there, we’ll create a realistic, practical plan tailored to you. This may involve adjusting your current meals, sharing meal and snack ideas (with recipes), and reviewing whether supplements might be started, adjusted, or discontinued. If needed, we may also recommend further tests or medications to discuss with your doctor.

What conditions do you specialise in?

Joanna specialises in a wide range of gastrointestinal conditions, including Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS), Small Intestinal Bacterial Overgrowth (SIBO), food intolerances (such as Low FODMAP and RPAH/Histamine diets) and gut-related symptoms like bloating, constipation, and diarrhoea. She also has a focus on the connection between gut health, hormones, and women’s health, particularly during perimenopause and menopause.

What if I need to reschedule or cancel an appointment?

We understand that life happens and you may need to cancel or reschedule. To allow us to offer your appointment time to someone else, we ask that you give as much notice as possible. You can cancel up to 24 hours before your appointment at no cost. Cancellations with less than 24 hours’ notice incur a 50% fee, while cancellations with less than 12 hours’ notice—or failure to attend—will be charged the full appointment fee.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Our comprehensive online intake form covers most of the information we need. To make your appointment as productive as possible, please bring or email any referrals or test results beforehand. It can also be helpful to come with a list of specific questions or topics you want to discuss.

Will you put me on a restrictive diet?

We believe that you are in charge of your health journey. While we may suggest an elimination diet like the Low FODMAP or a low Histamine diet to help identify your specific triggers, our approach is always collaborative. If you are not comfortable with a restrictive diet, we will discuss and explore other evidence-based options. Our ultimate aim is to help you build a balanced, diverse, and sustainable eating pattern so you can enjoy food without fear or stress
